A Diaspora Engagement Initiative

Looking Back Over 40 Years Through the Eyes of 40 Nigerians in Diaspora to Map a Better Future for Our Motherland

THE PAST

40 years ago, frustrated Nigerian youths (AKA Andrew) checked out of Nigeria for good. The Nigeria Diaspora Project 40/40 seeks to highlight the major wave of emigration history of the Nigerian Diaspora specifically narrowing it down from 1981 till 2021.

THE PRESENT

40 years after Andrew checked out, Nigeria is still the same. The Nigeria Diaspora Project 40/40 seeks to engage 40 Nigerians in diaspora to share their stories, transfer knowledge and inspire change. Andrew, Nigeria needs you now!

THE FUTURE

Within the next 40 years, a new generation of Andrews will emerge. The Nigeria Diaspora Project 40/40 seeks to ensure Nigerians in diaspora actively engage with our motherland and equip them with the means of doing so to help shape the future of Nigeria.

DIASPORA ROLE MODELS

The event will celebrate 40 diasporas that meet the following criteria:

1. Legal Residence

They are Nigerians abroad who haven't denied their Nigerian nationality and have legal resident permits.

2. Diaspora Impact

They are Nigerians abroad who are making notable impacts in their chosen fields, careers or in the communities of their host country.

3. Nigeria Impact

They are Nigerians abroad who haven't forgotten their origin and have made notable impacts also back home in Nigeria. These could be in the form of knowledge transfer, investments, remittance, charities, empowerment, policies, etc.

4. Duration Abroad

They are Nigerians abroad who have stayed not less than 10 years in their country of residence.

DIASPORA ANTHEM

Veno Marioghae's popular song "Nigeria go survive" in which she sings "Andrew don’t check out o, Nigeria go survive!"

Andrew no checkout o! ("say what? ")
Stay and build your country (Nigeria go survive)
Na who go die for you oo (Nigeria go survive)
Blood is thicker than water (Nigeria go survive)
If Andrew do him work oo (Nigeria go survive)
And me I do my own oo (Nigeria go survive)
